HIGHLIGHTS AND ATTRACTIONS

Modern Marvels

San Francisco is a city known for its iconic landmarks that are symbols of ingenuity and industry. Even through the fog for which the City by the Bay is notorious, it’s hard to miss the “international orange” glow of the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Considered one of the Wonders of the Modern World, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion in 1937. A short ferry ride affords visitors a peek inside Alcatraz – the maximum-security prison that once housed the likes of Al Capone. The popular tourist areas of Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf can be accessed by two of the three remaining cable car lines – part of the world’s last manually operated cable car system.

The Neighborhoods

As one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, the seven-by-seven-mile peninsula comprises 17 distinct neighborhoods, from Haight-Ashbury – the center of the Bay Area’s hippie counterculture – to the nation’s largest and oldest Chinatown. The Mission District is home to some of the city’s newest restaurants, and its Mission Dolores and Latino art scene are favorites with tourists and locals alike. Expansive views from atop Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower overlook North Beach – San Francisco’s Little Italy and home to authentic bistros and bustling nightlife. That’s just the start. Learn more about each neighborhood and its unique vibe here.

Room to Roam

Leave the hustle and bustle of city life behind, with activities ranging from mild to wild just a short drive away. The Bay Area is one of the state’s largest outdoor recreation destinations, with a whopping 28 national parks. From sailing in San Francisco Bay to kayaking in Sausalito, there’s something for just about everyone. Spend the day among towering old-growth redwoods in historic Muir Woods, or explore the more than 1,000 acres of Golden Gate Park highlighted by a stroll through the Japanese Tea House and Garden.
